  • What is Vacuum Packing?

Vacuum packing is the process of creating a complete vacuum inside a package, removing the oxygen, bacteria and any other potential contaminants that could harm, affect, or damage the food inside. Using specialist machinery, it not only increases the longevity, freshness and shelf life of fresh products but also helps reduce its overall size, making it easier to both transport as well as store. It can be done on a commercial or industrial level with large machinery, or at home for convenience based on the user’s needs to help with storage.

  • How Do Vacuum Packers Work?

Vacuum Packers work by removing the air (oxygen) from a vacuum pouch or vacuum bag. The packaging is placed inside the chamber of the machine then the operator brings the lid down to start a cycle. During this process the machine removes the air from inside the packaging which leaves just the product inside. The machine then seals the open end ensuring that no oxygen or other contaminants enter the inside of the package. Unless the package itself is compromised or damaged, the product will remain much fresher for longer without any external influence (light, heat, scent, bacteria).  They come in a variety of different sizes and can be used for a variety of food products including meat, fruit, vegetables and even coffee.

  • What is the Purpose of Vacuum Packing?

The main purpose of vacuum packing is to increase the potential shelf life and overall freshness of a food product, whilst reducing the space it requires to store and transport it. Vacuum packing turns the interior of any package into a complete vacuum, leaving only the product itself inside. By creating a vacuum internally, this removes the oxygen and potential for oxidation, mould, bacteria, and a variety of other external elements that can cause food to go bad before its sell by date.

Vacuum packing allows manufacturers to achieve a longer shelf life for their products, creating a better product for retail, reducing potential wastage, and improving the overall customer experience.
